People started putting up the bunting from about 10 am. At about 11am onwards we could see the tables being set up outside and children coming out to play on the street.
People put out their chairs and brought out toys for all the children to play with. There were quite a few other street parties on in our area, people from surrounding streets came to enjoy atmosphere too.
There was all sorts of drink, food, cakes, sandwiches etc. People just contributed whatever they wanted to. We made laksa and also provided a few beers, fruit juice and some cake.
One old man from another street was very impressed and asked me - how much do we have to pay? (for the food). I told him it was all free, he couldn't believe it.
There was entertainment too; some women on our street did a "Bollywood in Bellenden" performance. They were joined by one of our "eccentric" neighbours (in pink) who joined in with her own version.
She really reminded me of that woman from "Are you being served". All good fun.
Then dancers invited anyone to join them, just "follow the leader". Lots of people joined in, including Audrey!
We had sound system at one end of the street, but there was also live music during the afternoon.
It's our enthusiastic neighbour again!
For the children, there were games and crafts, chalk for them to draw on the road and a big art project. The idea is for all the children to do a bit and stick it on the poster.
See Josh's effort (the car). He hasn't quite got the hang of colouring-in yet.
A lovely day was had by all and at the end, the residents helped to clean up and carry the tables back to the local school. By 6pm, everything on the street on back to normal. The organisers did really well.
